Berkey Water Filter: An Honest Review

I was a few years into my journey to better health when my naturopathic doctor suggested looking into the Berkey Water Filters.

Berkey filters out the most impurities and contaminants that can be found in your drinking water than any other water filtration system on the market. Check out their website for an in-depth explanation and detailed list on what they filter out.

I ordered the travel size Berkey, which is the smallest one they offer. I figured that would be good enough for just my husband and I. We can find ourselves filing it up on average two times per day, so I do see the appeal behind a larger unit, even for just two people. I do appreciate that the travel Berkey doesn’t take up too much space in comparison to their larger units, though. It’s definitely the better option for small living spaces.

Putting the Berkey system together presents itself as a challenge if you’re trying to follow the instructions included in the manual. They are completely confusing to follow. The easiest tutorial I found was on YouTube and once I started assembling it alongside the video, I found it was easier than I anticipated.

After assembling and filling the Berkey for the first time, it was time for the taste test! I’ll admit, it had a slightly plastic-y taste at first. My husband and I both said right after our first few sips that is felt “smoother” than our regular tap water. I experienced a weird aftertaste for the first few days using the system. Within a week, I was my tastebuds adjusted and I was used to the taste. I accidentally drank a sip of regular tap water about a week after using the Berkey consistently and realized it smelled and tasted similar to chlorinated pool water. If that doesn’t make you question what’s in your drinking water, I don’t know what will!

Overall, I’m happy I made the decision to start taking my drinking water filtration seriously. I still use regular tap water to clean and cook with, but for myself, my husband, and my dog’s drinking water, we use the Berkey every single day. It’s become habit and I feel it’s another small step to overall better health for all of us.
